Blown wool

Ekovilla insulation slab

Ekovilla blown wool

for attic floors, ground floors, walls, usable and non-usable attics, for frame buildings, and for supplementing thermal insulation

Ekovilla is a carbon neutral blown wool. It is Finland’s favourite insulation for single family dwellings, but is also widely used in professional construction. Our blown wool is mainly made from plain newspaper and it has been used for insulating the homes of our customers for over forty years.

Insulating a home with cellulose insulation is an excellent way to reduce heating costs.

Properties of Blown-In Cellulose Insulation

Blown-in cellulose insulation is an environmentally friendly insulating material made primarily from recycled wood fibers. It is suitable for both new construction and renovation projects, offering several key benefits:
  • energy efficiency,
  • excellent thermal insulation performance,
  • effective sound insulation,
  • good structural fire-resistance properties,
  • breathability and safe use.

What Is Ekovilla Blown-In Insulation Suitable For?

Ekovilla blown-in insulation is highly suitable for timber-frame construction and for the same applications where Ekovilla insulation boards are used. Ekovilla insulation is manufactured from carefully selected recycled newsprint and treated with fire-retardant additives.

Wood fiber insulation is suitable for both new construction projects and renovation or retrofit applications. Its primary uses include attic floors, intermediate floors, subfloors, and walls.

This insulation material has been manufactured in Finland since 1979. Thanks to its excellent moisture-transfer capacity, Ekovilla insulation is also an ideal choice for passive and energy-efficient buildings.

Blown-in wool in new construction

Insulating a New Building with Blown-In Cellulose Insulation

Insulation has a direct impact on a building’s energy efficiency, operating costs, and indoor air quality throughout its entire lifespan. For this reason, the insulation of a new building should be carefully planned and properly installed during the construction phase.

Blown-in cellulose insulation provides highly effective thermal protection because it fills structural cavities seamlessly and without gaps, eliminating thermal bridges and ensuring a uniform insulation layer throughout the building envelope.

Attic and Roof Insulation

For insulating pitched roofs and attic spaces, Ekovilla has developed a specialized cavity insulation system. Following the installation guidelines, the contractor prepares enclosed cavities that are then densely filled with insulation material by a qualified professional.

This solution allows complex roof structures to be insulated quickly and efficiently, reducing the risk of installation errors commonly associated with traditional insulation methods.

When the structure is prepared according to the installation instructions, the entire attic insulation process can be completed in a single operation. For enclosed cavity applications, the use of experienced insulation contractors is strongly recommended. The recommended insulation density for these applications is approximately 45 kg/m³.

Floor Insulation

Floor insulation is an important factor affecting both the energy efficiency of a building and overall living comfort. Ekovilla blown-in insulation is particularly well suited for insulating ventilated floors, suspended timber floors, and crawl-space floor structures, as it adapts perfectly to the construction, filling all gaps and creating a continuous layer of insulation.

The breathable nature of blown-in cellulose insulation helps regulate moisture levels within the structure while reducing heat loss through the floor. As a result, it can contribute to lower heating costs and provide a warmer, more comfortable floor surface.

Blown-in wool in renovation and insulation upgrades

Renovation and insulation with blown-in wool

Blown-in wool is an excellent solution for additional building insulation because its fine structure allows it to easily penetrate the structural cavities of a home. This insulation is characterized by low air permeability, which helps reduce convective air currents that cool down the structure. For this reason, blown-in wool is well suited, among others, for insulating unused summer cottages.

Eco wool (eco-wadding) protects wooden structures by regulating the moisture level within the material. Its vapor permeability makes it an ideal solution for insulating wooden buildings, which is why it is also commonly used in historic buildings and properties of high cultural value.

Additional insulation of the attic (upper floor ceiling)

Additional insulation of the upper floor with blown-in wool is easy to carry out and can be done at any time of the year. The more varied and irregular the substrate, the better the Ekovilla solution performs.

The insulation can be applied over existing layers, such as mineral wool insulation or other thermal insulation materials. Professionally installed additional insulation is quick and effective, and its results are durable and uniform.

Additional insulation of the lower floor

Blown-in wool is an excellent solution for additional insulation of, for example, floor joists (Rossi base) from the interior side. Additional insulation eliminates, among other things, air leaks typical of older buildings at the junction between the external wall and the lower floor.
